How do data silos work?

Hi everyone. I've been doing some research on data silos and have found countless articles on why data silos are problematic and to be avoided at all costs, but I haven't found much information on how data silos work. Can someone explain this to me? How are data silos created? What do they do?

Data silos are costly and time consuming for businesses. Data silos mean it is run as different entities. Also, the business units are completely decentralized in this system. As data silos are expensive, usually large companies use them.
