Why do data silos need to be broken down?
Asked 3 years ago
Data silos seem to get quite a bad rap. It seems like every discussion on data silos ends with listing ways of breaking them down. I just wonder if they're really that problematic. Why do data silos need to be broken down?

Silos are not very bad. They are gotten from processes and systems that help structure the organisation. However, if the structures cause a resistance that holds departments from sharing information, then it should be broken down. We are in the information age, if data cannot be shared between other departments in the organisation, some processes may be hampered. Customer service representatives may not be able to get enough data to assist customers, management will not be able to make well-informed decisions, the supply chain may be disturbed and so on..
